In the very early eighties, the government of Arab Republic of Egypt set a provision of an integrated strategic policy for the development and expansion of the Egyptian merchant fleet in terms of size and type. This policy has in fact created the proper environment for the foundation of National Navigation Company, as a free zone company with a paid capital of 50 million USD, to facilitate and enhance Egypt’s trade and on the other hand to participate in the sea-transportation of international dry bulk commodities. National Navigation Company, since its very beginning in May 1981, has been active in the dry bulk market, booking “Contract of Affreightment” and chartering in and out various types of ships carrying cargoes to Egyptian ports and other destinations world wide. Being Egypt’s largest bulk carries owner and operator, National Navigation Company has taken the pioneering steps towards development and modernizing the Egyptian fleet. In 1985 the company delivered its first owned bulk carries from Hyundai shipyard: the two handy size ships “ALWADI ALGADEED & WADI HALFA” of 32000 tons dead weight each and the four handy max ships “WADI ALNAKHEEL, WADI ALNATROON, WADI ALMOLOUK & WADI ALKAMAR” of 45000 tons dead weight each. In 1993 the passenger ship “WADI ALNEEL” joined the company’s fleet to sail the Suez-Jeddah route serving the pilgrims and promoting the trade between the two ports. In 1994, 1995 & 1997 the four owned Panamax bulk carries “WADI ALARISH, WADI ALARAB, WADI SUDR & WADI ALKARNAK” of 70000 tons dead weight each, were respectively delivered from Daewoo shipyard. These 10 bulk carries totaling 524000 tons dead weight capacity represent about 55% of the total Egyptian bulk carries fleet, and is considered to be the largest capacity of bulk carries owned by one company either in Egypt or in the Middle East. National Navigation Company commits an annual average of 50 ships of different categories from the open market which in addition to the owned fleet transport an annual average of 3.5 million tons of bulk cargoes to Egypt and other destinations. Both owned fleet and chartered ships have participated widely in serving the international maritime transport community world wide.
